THE GEORGE WASHINGTON HOUSE
THE GEORGE WASHINGTON HOUSE
PROJECT: COMPLETE RESTORATION OF AND ADDITIONS TO A HISTORIC 1766 HOME
LOCATION: NANTUCKET, MASSACHUSETTS
DESIGNER: DEBORAH BRIEN - RIVERLIGHT BUILDERS
BUILDER: RIVERLIGHT BUILDERS
This quaint and historic home in the heart of downtown Nantucket had been neglected for many decades. Built during the presidency of George Washington, the original home was quite small at just over 800 square feet but the lot afforded the opportunity for expansion. The foundation had failed and the house was sinking into the ground necessitating major structural repairs. The house was lifted from it's crumbling foundation, including the large original central chimney with four fireplaces, and temporarily moved to the other side of the small lot so that a new foundation could be built, after which it was returned to its original location. The house was far too small in it's existing state for modern day living so in addition to the complete restoration of the existing house, several small additions were added. Great care was taken in the design process to pay homage to home's history and too be respectful of period details. Nantucket's architectural review board, the Historic District Commission, called it one of the most respectful restorations and additions to a historic home in recent they had presided over and approved the plans at the first submission. The result is a beautiful blend of charm and history in functional, modern-day floor plan including a large master suite, three additional guest rooms and bathrooms, a gourmet kitchen and pantry and multiple living spaces.
